There’s this thing called Smonday: the moment when Sunday stops feeling like a Sunday and the anxiety of Monday kicks in. Anybody else ever experienced Smonday? Cause I know I have. Probably too many times to count.
I feel like this happens every single work week, but last week I really didn’t want to go to work. A sista be tired, okay?! I enjoy my bed very much, but like we always say, “the money ain’t gone make itself”.
I told myself, if I have to go to work, I’m going to make the best of it. Eight hours won’t hurt, right?
So, on my way to work, I usually turn on my gospel jams to get my mind right, read a devotional or two once I’m in the parking lot, and say a quick prayer right before I go in. Even during my shift, I’ll have short conversations with God like, “Lord, give me patience”, or “God, I’m so tired. Please just help me get to 4:30”. Last week I tried something a little different: Affirmations.
I’m a part of a mentoring group that consists of beautiful young ladies who I call my sisters and our mentor always encourages us to speak affirmations over our lives. In fact, we say affirmations every single time we meet. For the first time, I tried it while at work and I had the most amazing day!
I work with children who have been diagnosed with autism and I absolutely love what I do! My brother was diagnosed with autism, so these kids have a special place in my heart. While enjoyable and rewarding, my job is also very challenging. Often, I have to find ways to just get myself through a work day, let alone an entire week.
I believe it was a Thursday, as I was sitting in the lobby area at work. I was waiting for my kiddo to arrive. It was just me in the area at the time, so I decided to utter short affirmations to myself.
“I am beautiful.”
“I am fearfully, and wonderfully made.”
“I can do this”.
“I was made for this.”
“I am courageous.”
“I am gifted.”
“I am a daughter of the King.”
And I just kept going until I felt ready to take on the day. All throughout my shift, I kept reminding myself of the affirmations I said that morning. Even as I’m writing this, I’m thinking to myself, “I definitely have to do that more often.”
Cause listen, positive self-talk ain’t always the easiest talk to have, but it’ll sho nuff get you through. Positive self-talk goes hand in hand with having a positive mindset as well. (Remember, I said I kept reminding myself of those affirmations throughout my day. That’s important!)
Let’s take it a step further. Your affirmations become so powerful when you include scriptures. Say what the Lord has said about you! Speak over your life what the Lord has confirmed in His Word! Remember, that the Bible is your weapon! Any negative thought the devil tries to throw your way, hit him with the Word!
“I shall be strong and courageous.” (Joshua 1:9)
“I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Psalms 139:14)
“I have no reason to fear.” (Psalms 27:1)
“I am chosen.” (Ephesians 1:4; John 15:16)
There are so many scriptures we can use as affirmations! Use what God gave you to WIN in this life! Speak well of yourself! Speak positivity, anywhere and everywhere! The Bible tells us that life and death lie in the power of the tongue! (Proverbs 18:21) That’s why we should say our affirmations aloud! Hear me: SPEAK. THAT. THANG. OKAY?!
There’s a quote I love that I post on my Instagram from time to time. “This is your Sunday evening reminder that you can handle whatever this week throws at you.” Let this post be your Sunday evening reminder. You can do this! God is with you!
reFRESHments
I’ve got a task for you today. I know I usually provide the scriptures for reFRESHments, but your homework is to find at least 3 scriptures that you will use as affirmations for your life! Once you’ve done that, leave one of them in the comments below! I’d love to see what you've found in the Word!
There are a bunch of songs you can use as positive affirmations as well. Here’s one of my favorites.
Song: Encourage Yourself - Donald Lawrence & The Tri-City Singers
I love you, but most importantly, God loves you too!
Peace & Blessings,
